RoboCam Placement |
| The most critical element of RoboCam use is the placement of the cameras |
Beyond the skill of operating a RoboCam, I offer the expertise to determine the proper placement of the cameras, taking into consideration the genre of the show, the need for concealment, placement of cables, relationship to the other cameras, the flow of people, the personalities of the people being filmed, and a myriad of other issues. |
I work closely with the Art Department to develop hidden camera blinds, when needed, and have extensive experience as to what will work successfully and have techniques to hide the connecting cables. |
Safety is a major concern and must be taken into consideration. The cameras must be wired and placed in accordance with local regulations and simple, practical judgment. |
It is very feasible to have more camera positions, than cameras. As an example, I will install camera cable runs to 7 Positions, when only 4 cameras are available. When a camera is not in use at one location, it can be quickly moved to another position so you have effective camera coverage where the action is. This is very simple to do, except when the camera must be hidden, or if the crew and equipment must remain stealthy. |
Another consideration is where the control point is and how inconspicuous it must be. There will always be cables involved no matter which system is chosen, however, there are ways to reduce cabling, and there are limited wireless alternatives, if absolutely necessary. |
One of the great advantages is all of the systems I work with run on 12 volts DC, so the cameras can be placed in any location, and if necessary run on battery. This allows the camera to be placed in cars, and exterior locations in which power is not readily available. But the limitation of these systems is how long the HD-SDI cables can be. Technically speaking these cameras have a maximum run distance of about 300 feet, however, this is reduced if there are adapters or additional connectors added to the cable run. The distance can be increased through the use of optional Re-Clocking HD-SDI Distribution Amps. In some hidden camera situations, I have placed the recording device next to the camera and remotely activated and monitored it. This can only be done if there is unfettered access to the recording device being used for media change out or the recording media will last long enough for the entire event to be covered. |
